Depending on the children’s ages, we suggest that you select books as follows:
Kindergarten/Preschool (4 - 6 years old)
  • Picture books - most children this age do not recognize characters
  • Books introducing pinyin
Grades 1 – 2 (7 - 8 years old)
  • Beginning to read independently and comprehension skills developing
  • Books with pinyin
  • Books with rich details
  • A wide variety of subjects, e.g. science, poetry, fiction, non-fiction
Grades 3 – 4 (9 - 10 years old)
  • Independent reading and thinking abilities quickly improving
  • By grade 3, textbooks do not have pinyin
  • Some pictures in books are okay, but avoid pinyin
  • More descriptive writing and concepts
Grades 5 - 9 (11+ years)
  • Reading level at this age is close to that of adults
  • Longer books written in characters with no pictures or pinyin recommended
  • Translations of foreign books are popular, e.g. books by Jules Verne (Chinese name 凡尔纳)
  • At this age, book preferences tend to differ between genders: boys like more science fiction and fantasy books, while girls prefer romantic or emotional novels.
Chinese dictionaries are not necessary; schools usually provide them
These book recommendations are for reference only. If buying for several children, we suggest buying a wide variety of books so children can share with their peers.
