Zhen Zeng-Liao

Community Center Shanghai Executive Director

Community Center Shanghai is thrilled to welcome Zhen Zeng-Liao, our new Executive Director, in January 2016. Zhen brings a heart of passion and a head of international business savvy to serving the community. A native of China, she studied and graduated from The University of Michigan with a Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering in the United States. After graduation, Zhen worked at GE Plastics, The Dow Chemical Company, and Dow Corning Shanghai. In addition to years of experience in corporate business management, Zhen also brings rich experience in volunteerism. Since 1995, Zhen has served in many volunteer management roles including Oversea Chinese Association, Stepping Stones China, and Co-Head of Docent Training for the National Museum of Singapore.


Tess Robinson 

Board of Directors, Chairman

Tess Robinson is the Founder and Managing Partner of TEAM Education Consulting Company where she is also the Director of Counseling. Tess has an AB in International Relations from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She has also earned her certificate in College Admissions Counseling from UCLA. Tess brings 12 years of college advisory experience to her work and has lived in Shanghai for 8 years. She is fluent in French and Spanish, as well as conversant in Mandarin. She is married and has 3 sons.


Jon Brantingham 

Board of Directors, Executive Committee

Jon Brantingham was born and raised in Taiwan and is the fourth generation in his family to live and work in China. As CEO of Brantingham Manufacturing (China), he has developed a thriving business that exports to markets in three continents. He and Judy are parents of four active boys, and Jon plays basketball and golf when time allows. Jon serves on the board of Concordia International School Shanghai, and relates to a prison ministry project in Taiwan that he helped to start and develop. Jon served as chairman of the Community Center board from 2003-2007.


Dr. Nathan D. Showalter 

Board of Directors, Executive Committee

Nate is an American who has lived half of his adult life in Asia (Hong Kong, Taipei, and Shanghai). Previously, Nate has worked in community and leadership development roles in Africa, Asia. and North America, and has worked and traveled in more than 50 countries and six continents. He enjoys biking, reading, writing, learning about the history and culture of China, and traveling to new places with family and friends. Nate and Chris are parents of Eli who graduated from Concordia International School Shanghai in 2007. Nate served as Executive Director of Community Center Shanghai from 2003-2007 during which the center underwent tremendous growth.


Jason Tan 

Board of Directors 

Jason Tan was born in Taiwan but went to the US at an early age. He founded Highlander Technology Corporation in San Francisco, CA, specializing in software consulting and systems integration. Jason has been involved in investment and management positions in the IT, real estate and service industries, also serving as the vice president of the California Senate Friendship Committee (CSFC) beginning in 1998, where he was in charge of California Senate delegation to foreign countries. In 2005, Jason moved to Shanghai and is currently an investor and developer of a free stand diagnostic medical image center.


Stella Si

Board of Directors

Stella Si became the Executive Director of Community Center Shanghai in July 2011. She graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, and received a Master’s Degree in Communications from Penn State University. She has worked in New York for over 18 years in fashion PR and merchandising. Stella returned to Shanghai with her husband’s expat assignment in 2006, and worked for CCS as Marketing Director from 2007 to 2009. She initiated the Gala, Spelling Bee, and the Bazaar. Stella then became the General Manager of E&A Shanghai Branch, a luxury brands PR firm that serves clients such as Calvin Klein, Dolce Gabbanna, DKNY, and Armani Exchange. Her unique background has given her a deep understanding of the cultural differences between China and the West. Her experience at E&A also built up her connections to senior Chinese government offices. Stella is married to Dr. John Hu and they have two children.


Dean Larson

Board of Directors

Dean Larson is currently CFO Asia Pacific for Inalfa Roof Systems, a Tier 1 automotive provider of vehicle roofing systems. Dean is a strategically focused global finance executive with over 25 years of diverse experience spanning 3 regions (NA, EUROPE, and AP), 5 countries (US, UK, Spain, China, and Philippines), and a variety of industries (manufacturing, financial services, consumer electronics, automotive, logistics, and supply chain). He holds an MBA from The Wharton School at U. of Pennsylvania and a BA from U. of Washington. A resident of Shanghai for over 9 years, he and his wife Kelly Jo have 3 daughters (2 currently attending university in the US) and are very active members in the community serving in various capacities through affiliations with church, education, athletic, and family organizations.


Dr. Mary Scott

Board of Directors

Dr. Mary K. Scott is the Head of School at Concordia International School Shanghai. She previously served at Concordia University in Irvine, California. During her time at the university, she served as a member of the faculty, Athletic Director, Vice President, and most recently Executive Vice President and Provost. She helped the university globalize the academic curriculum and student services area. Mary has lived in Shanghai since July 2016 and is married to Dan, a professor. Joining them in Shanghai is their daughter Anna who is in 5th grade at Concordia. They have two grown children who remain in the US.  


Patrick Hopkins

Board of Directors

Born in Chicago, Patrick has over four decades of experience working in Asia—mainly Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Philippines, and China. He served in many NGOs, including as Director of the Catholic Relief Services in Pakistan, Consultant by the USAID & World Bank, and Advisor to the National Institute of Health, Pakistan. Most recently Patrick is on the Board of the Rotary Club of Pudong, Lujiazui and served as President of the club in the 2015-2016 Rotary year. Patrick founded Global Benefits Consulting Company in 2003, which is now MSH Asia. Patrick is a board director at MSH Asia with an in-depth understanding of the health insurance landscape in China and Asia.
